Facility

The Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center has a total of 12 courts, which includes four lighted courts. The tennis teams from both MUS and Hutchison call the tennis center their home court. The center is run by Coach Phil Chamberlain, director of the center since the fall of 2008. Since joining the center, Coach Chamberlain has added a long list of clinics for both adults and juniors.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center took place in June of 1997. Some of the alumni involved in the event were Mary Pettey Garrett (Hutchison ’71), Holmes Pettey (MUS ’69), John Dunavant (MUS ’82), John Pettey (MUS ’67), Allison Garrott Braswell (Hutchison ’88), and Alex Wellford (MUS ’60). The facility, completed in the spring of 1998 on the southern edge of campus near Hutchison School, comprises 12 courts (four lighted) and a clubhouse with an observation deck. The center is shared by MUS and Hutchison School and marks the first joint-building venture between the two schools.
